Motorola has officially confirmed their alliance with Google to start working on Android OS operated cellphones in a statement made to BetaNews the morning of October 1st, 2008. This comes to no surprise to many, as Motorola has been one of the founding members of the
Open Handset Alliance (OHA) since its debut in November of last year.
“We’re excited about the innovation possibilities on Android, and [we] look forward to delivering great products in partnership with Google and the Open Handset Alliance (OHA),” a Motorola spokesperson said, in a statement to BetaNews.
Motorola, as expected, will not comment on any current projects they are working on. Motorola hasn’t had a successor cellphone since the infamous RAZR, which is quite old now.
“Motorola has long been an advocate of open software for mobile platforms. Today, we’re excited to continue this support by joining Google and others in the announcement of the Open Handset Alliance and Android platform. Motorola plans to leverage the Android platform to enable seamless, connected services and rich consumer experiences in future Motorola products,” according to Zander.
Samsung, nor LG have confirmed this, but it is looking quite likely that they will, seeing as they are both members of the Open Handset Alliance. If Samsung designed and released a cellphone better than the Samsung Omnia, or if LG designed something better or comparable to their LG Dare, we’d be going places. Places in the right direction, too.

Google has made the decision to not allow applications uploaded on the Android Market to have a set price at launch. At first, all applications will have to be free, so I highly suggest if you are working on an app that you wish to put up for a price, it is best you wait a while before uploading your game to the Market, or, make it available through Handango (read on).
It is still unclear as to when Google will make paid apps available via the Android Market, but we will be sure to let you know as soon as we find out.

Handango,
a multi-platform app store for smartphones, said it will be offering Android applications as early as November.
“We have many loyal customers that we expect will want to try the Android device but are comfortable purchasing from Handango,” said Bill Stone, Handango’s CEO, via e-mail. “What is interesting and exciting for us is that we can offer customers and developers the choice of free and paid applications at launch as well as the ability to purchase them via the Web and then download to their device.”
Handango has made an agreement with EA Mobile to start selling their games on the Handango App Store before paid apps are available through the Android Market.
One thing that makes Google stand out from Apple in particular, is the fact that they will not be taking a 30% cut from paid apps, like Apple has been doing since the launch of the iPhone App Store.
Another cool tip about the Android Market is the fact that there will be three ways to distribute apps. One, of course, will be for free. Another way will be to sell them for a one-time purchase fee. And the last would be to set up a monthly, quarterly, or yearly subscription fee.
Now that is rather interesting.

On what looks to be a photo of a Best Buy’s product stock program (see above), it is being reported that the T-Mobile G1 cellphone will be in stock at Best Buy stores starting 10-26-2008 (October 26th, 2008). Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the G1 will be available for purchase on October 26th. It may take up to a week, possibly even longer, before the company (’Best Buy’) officially starts selling the products on their store shelves and/or online.
T-Mobile will officially start selling the G1 at local T-Mobile retail stores on October 22nd. This gives the company a week or two to sell G1’s to local consumers before Best Buy (and most likely other retail stores) take over and start grabbing some of the G1 sales.

According to the Marketing Pilgrim, the G1, Google’s premiering Android powered cellphone, has officially been written off as sold out just one week after its initial announcement this past week. Although the G1 isn’t, and will not be available for another three weeks yet, the G1 has still sold out of preordered units.
Of course, it’d make sense for T-Mobile to set aside a large amount of G1’s to be sold in store on the official launch day, but aside from that, all G1’s have already been spoken for. A report by Business Week states that T-Mobile expects to sell half a million G1’s quarter four of 2008. T-Mobile has apparently bought 1.5 to 2 million units altogether.
Two million sales isn’t a lot when comparing to Apple’s iPhone line up, however, when taking into consideration the amount of competition we’ll be likely to see among Android handsets, it’ll be plenty enough.
It is being said that there are five other cellphone makers that are already working on releasing Android platformed cellphones, three of which are rumored to be Samsung, LG, Motorola. Qualcomm is apparently “definitely” one of the other makers.
It doesn’t look too promising for Nokia to be jumping on the Android-bandwagon, as they are working on their own new Nokia Tube cellphone. This thing’s got a nice large touch screen, and is bundled with a subscription music download service.
Personally I don’t believe the G1 will be an “iPhone” killer, but if Google keeps up with their Android platform, and Samsung takes a punch at a gorgeous, slick looking cellphone, they just may have a chance next year.
What are you thoughs on this subject?

As a first post, I’d like to open the doors with a bit of comedy. Nitrozac & Snaggy of The Joy of Tech recently released a new comic strip, comparing the G1 with the iPhone. Have a look for yourself just below.

So, porn on the G1, and all upcoming Android platform devices…. How do you think Google will take care of things such as so? Please leave a comment and let us know your thoughts. Cudos to Nitrozac & Snaggy. This comic is great.
So comedy aside, I’d like to take a moment to welcome all of you to Android Podium, the third project of The Podium Network. Android Podium has actually been planned out for half a year now, but every time I wanted to start working on the blog, it just didn’t feel like the time was right.
Now, with the recent announcement of T-Mobile and Google’s G1 cellphone, the time seems as right as it’ll ever get.
Please, grab a chair and lets share our thoughts, shall we?
